OpenAI is set to require organizations to complete an ID verification process to access certain future AI models. The process, called Verified Organization, requires a government-issued ID from one of the countries supported by OpenAI’s API. The ID can only be verified one organization every 90 days, and not all organizations will be eligible. OpenAI aims to ensure AI is broadly accessible and used safely, as a small minority of developers intentionally use the APIs in violation of its usage policies. The new verification process could be intended to increase security around OpenAI’s products as they become more sophisticated and capable. It may also be aimed at preventing IP theft, as OpenAI was investigating a group linked with DeepSeek for exfiltrating large amounts of data through its API in late 2024.
